Aragatsotn region welcomes us. We will begin our journey on the church of St. Mesrop Mashtots, and the monument of Armenian alphabet, then our way lays to Amberd Castle, which is located halfway to the peaks of Aragats in a beautiful and powerful gorge between two rivers, at an altitude of more than 2000 meters. The castle is said to have numerous underground routes, several of which still can be found. We keep climbing and at an altitude of 3200 m above sea level, the unique mountain lake Kari opens.

Visit to the wine-brandy factory ArmAs, where guided excursion, degustation and a gala dinner await us. Excursion starts from the walk through the picturesque vineyards and fruit gardens that stretch across the plantation. 10:30 Oshakan village, St. Mesrop Mashtots church built in the 4th century, a monument to the Armenian alphabet.

St. Mesrop Mashtots is the creator of the Armenian alphabet, Armenian language and literature, the founder of Armenian school, the first teacher of the Armenian language. After his death, Prince Vahan Amatuni and commander Amayak Mamikonyan moved his body to Oshakan, where three years later, in 443, Vahan Amatuni built a chapel.

To honor Mashtots memory, Catholicos Hovsep instructed Koryun to write about the life and creative activity of Mesrop Mashtots. In 1875-79 Catholicos Gevorg IV built a new church of the basilic type in place of the old chapel. In the direction of the altar the mausoleum of Mesrop Mashtots is located (433), it is considered a sacred place for pilgrimage. On his tomb the ordination of Armenian monks is performed.

11:30 Castle fortress Amberd VII century

Amberd is the biggest Armenian castle, which is located on the slope of Mount Aragats, at an altitude of more than 2000 meters. It is assumed that the castle was founded by the princes of Kamsarakan, then it passed into the possession of the Armenian military commander Vahram Pahlavuni. In the end the castle was bought by Armenian rulers from the Bagratun dynasty, who turned the castle into the main outpost of their kingdom. The fortress-castle lost its importance and was completely devastated at the end of the XIV century during the invasion of Tamerlane.

At the present time a castle-fortress (X-XIII centuries), ruins of fortress walls, a bath (X-XI century), remains of other buildings and the Catholic church of Vahramashen preserved. (1026).
