There were schools of different educational types, where students studied philosophy, music, and philology. There were also scribers, who copied various manuscripts.

Today these manuscripts have survived to the present day and now are housed in Matenadaran. In the 17th century here lived and scribed the historian Zakaria Kanakerzi, who wrote the story of Hovhannavank. The activity of Hovhannavank stopped at the beginning of the XIX century.

It is outwardly rectangular, internally cross-shaped structure with four angular two-story sacristies. The facade of the church is decorated with Armenian niches. The monastery was surrounded by a semicircular gate with fortified walls. In 1267 Vardan Avereltsi founded a school in Sagmosavank. In 1267 Gevorg Skevrazi rewrote the collection Tonapatchar, which is currently in Echmiadzin.
